Following an increase of Rwanda Gorilla permit costs, travelers have decided to get alternative gorilla trekking destinations in Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo. In other words, Rwanda made an automatic marketing strategy for Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo’s Gorillas which has boosted the two country’s tourism industries.

On 6th may 2017, Rwanda increased the cost of their Gorilla permits from US$ 750 to US$ 1500 per permit which caused a negative out come to the tourism industry and the entire economy of Rwanda.Since the Democratic Republic of Congo is among Rwanda neighbors. This was automatic pass for it to revive her tourism Industry through Gorilla trekking.

The Democratic Republic of Congo is the second largest nation in Africa after Algeria. DR Congo is one of the richest countries in Africa as far as tourism is concerned. The country has virgin tourist potentials ranging from Drainage, relief, wild animals, vegetation, birds, and culture and so on.It should be noted that DR Congo is among African countries gifted with low land Gorillas and Mountain Gorillas.  Therefore, DR. On the other hand Virunga National park received the largest number of tourists because of the following reasons:-It is easily accessible from Goma city (30 minutes’ drive)-It hosts both mountain and Low land Gorillas.

The Virunga National Park is situated in politically volatile region guarded by the United Nations Organization Army in conjunction with DR. Congo Army. It offers the best view of Virunga ranges. The Mikeno Volcano, Nyamuragira Volcano, Nyiragongo Volcano among others mostly seen while in Virunga National Park.

The low cost of Gorilla permit at US$400 each as also promotes Gorilla trekking in DR. Congo. Her counter parks Uganda at US$600 and Rwanda at US$ 1500 per permit.Among other strategies to promote tourism in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

All tourists looking to gorilla visits are escorted and guarded by the national army from the boarder to the park and back. That gives confidence to the tourists to go gorilla trekking in DR. Congo.

Gorilla trekking is among the most exciting activities in the world – therefore, everybody should enjoy it before death and looking into the eye of a Gorilla is a life changing event. Some people believe that Democratic Republic of Congo offers the best Gorilla trekking experience because trekkers move through fresh or virgin habitat of the might Virunga region.

The habitat is still well preserved because of few trekkers who have been trekking gorillas in Democratic Republic of Congo in the past years. In the past years, gorilla trekking in DRC has been hindered by unpredictable security causing fear and tension to the tourists forcing them to divert to Rwanda and Uganda.

Alongside DRC, Uganda has also gained a lot from the increase of Rwanda Gorilla permits to the extent of receiving more than 100 Gorilla trekkers every day.

How Tough is a Gorilla Trek

This is one of the most frequently asked questions about gorilla safaris in Rwanda. And it is also perhaps the most difficult to answer. So many variables are involved, and if they all conspire against you, you could be I for a genuinely exhausting outing indeed, on rare occasions; the guides have have to carry tourists down.

On the other hand,if everything falls in your favour, the excursion will be little more demanding than the proverbial stroll in the park. The trek to see the gorillas has two distinct phases. The first is the hike from the closest car park to the forest and national park boundary, which usually takes 30-60 minutes depending on the speed of the party and the group they are visiting. The second is the trek into the forest in search of the gorillas, which will usually have been located by the advance trackers by the time tourists reach the forest edge. This might take anything from 10minutes to 2hours, but 20-30 minutes is typical, especially for those groups whose territory lies closer to the forest edge.

The first part of the trek is predictable, and it is usually quite flat and undemanding unless you are going to the Susa group, which involves a longer and steeper ascent. The second part is more difficult to predict, as it will depend on the exact location of the gorillas on the day, and the steepness of the terrain en route.

Other factors in determining how tough it will be include the destiny of the vegetation bending and crawling through the jungle can be tiring , especially if you have to dodge vicious nettles and whether it has rained recently , in which case everything will be muddier and quite slippery underfoot. At risk of stating the obvious, age and fitness levels are the key factors in how difficult the hike will feel. Susa group aside, moderately fit people under the age of 40 seldom feel any significant strain, but a high proportion of trackers are in their 50s or 60s in which case the hike might be somehow  tougher.

Some older trackers or travellers find tracking gorillas quite demanding, it is very unusual that they are so daunted as to turn back. An important factor is determining how difficult the hike will be is which group you are allocated. As a rule, the hike to the Susa group is the most demanding but also the most rewarding, with than 40 gorillas on show, while the Sabyinyo group is the most reliably straight forward to reach. The hikes to Kwitonda, Hirwa and group thirteen are also usually quite undemanding, whereas the hikes to the Amahoro and Umubano groups tend to be more difficult, but not as tough as the Susa group.

Unfortunately, these things aren’t set in stone, and any group might be unusually demanding or easy to reach on a bad day. Furthermore, nobody can guarantee which group you will be allocated in advance. However , the guides at Kinigi do make a conscious attempt to match individuals to the most suitable group, especially if they are asked to. Generally, the party for the Susa group consists of lean-looking under 30s while the opposite holds true for the Sabyinyo party. Two further factors are uneven underfoot conditions and high altitude.

Most visitors to Africa live in towns and cities where roads and sidewalks are paved, and parks are serviced by neatly maintained footpaths, so they are unused to walking on the more irregular and seasonally slippery surfaces typical of the scent paths and forest floor. It will help enormously in this regard to wear strong water proof shoes or hiking boots with a good tread and solid ankle support. Furthermore, if you think you might struggle in these conditions, there is a lot to be said for avoiding the rainy seasons, in particular March-May, when conditions can be dauntingly muddy. Don’t underestimate the tiring effect of altitude.

The trekking takes place at elevations of 2,500-3,000m above sea level, not high enough for altitude sickness to be a concern but sufficient to knock the breath out of anybody no matter how fit who has just flown in from a low altitude. For this reason, visitors who are spending a while in Rwanda might think seriously about leaving their gorilla tracking until they have been in the country a week or so and are better acclimatized. Most of Rwanda lies above 1,500m, and much of the country is higher a couple of days at Nyungwe, which lies above 2,000m, would be good preparation for the Virungas. Likewise, if you are coming from elsewhere in Africa try to plan your itinerary so that you spend your last pre- Rwanda days at medium to high altitude, for example  were you flying to Kenya, a few days in Nairobi 2,300m or even the Masai Mara 1,600m would be far better preparation than time at the coast.

Guides will generally offer you a walking stick at the start of the hike, and even if you normally shun such props, it is worth taking up the offer to help support you on those slippery mountain paths. If you have luggage, hire a porter too. Once on the trail, take it easy, and don’t be afraid to ask to stop for a few minutes whenever you feel tired. Drink plenty of water, and carry some quick calories biscuits and chocolate can both be bought at supermarkets in Ruhengeri.

If you are carrying much gear and food or water, its advisable to hire one of the porters who hang about at the park in the hope of work. Tourists who refuse a porter for ‘ethical reasons’ are simply denying income to poor locals and making it harder for them to gain any benefit from tourism. The good news is that most people who track gorillas find the hike to be far less demanding than they expect, and in 99% of cases, whatever exhaustion you might feel on the way up will vanish with the adrenalin charge that follows the first sighting of a silverback gorilla.

Things to Know About Gorilla Trekking

In Uganda, Gorilla trekking is carried out from Bwindi Impenetrable national park and Mgahinga National Park. In these parks, one should expect to find different gorilla families which are well habituated for visitors to track. Bwindi has the highest number of gorillas compared to Mgahinga and this is the reason why it records the highest number of visitors. A client is required to obtain a gorilla trekking permit which goes for USD600 and it issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. This permit is issued per person per day and it specifies the gorilla family to trek. A trek in Bwindi and Mgahinga takes 20minutes to three quarters of the day deepening on the gorilla family. It should also be noted that the maximum time a tourist is allowed to spend with the gorillas is one hour.

In Rwanda, gorilla trekking is the leading tourism activity attracting people from different countries in the world. The activity can only be carried out in the tropical rain-forests of Volcanoes National Park which is about 80km from Kigali, Rwanda’s capital city. The park is estimated to harbor about 350 mountain gorillas and these are easily seen on a walk through the thick forests covered with different tree species. Just like Uganda, a tourist is expected to obtain a trekking permit and this costs USD750.

Gorilla trekking in Democratic Republic of Congo is another life-changing experience full of unforgettable moments. In DRC, gorilla trekking is carried out in Virunga National Park which is estimated to be home to over 200 mountain gorillas. Although its challenging to access the park from Goma, the capital city of DRC, there is an alternative route from Kigali to the boarder in Goma. This takes about three hours and it is not as stressing as that from Goma.

Before going for a gorilla trekking safari to Uganda, Rwanda and DRC, there are some things that a tourist should put into consideration and there are;-

  • Timing of the trip: before one thinks of travelling for as trek tour, he/she should consider the time of travel. The best time to go for a gorilla trekking trip is during the dry season. This is because the routes in the different national parks where the primates can be tracked are dry enough and not slippery.
  • Things to carry: While packing for the trip, there are certain things that should not miss in your travel bag. These include suitable clothes for trekking like long pants, gloves, sunglasses and big shoes suitable for the activity.
  • Gorilla family to visit. This is important especially if a client is interested in a Uganda gorilla trekking safari. A gorilla permit in Uganda should specify the specific gorilla family one is to visit and this is very important. This is different from Rwanda and DRC where a permit allows a visitor to trek any gorilla family in the park.
  • Tour Company to use: It is always important for a client to use a credible tour company like us if it comes to an adventurous gorilla tracking experience and therefore one should take time and choose the best company.
  • Health: Tracking the gorillas involves use of energy and one should ensure that he/she is physically fit. In most cases, the trek involves climbing and penetrating thick forest and this calls for some energy. Another reason is that mountain gorillas can be affected by some human diseases and therefore a tourist who is sick is not allowed to go near them.

Fitness Requirements for Gorilla Trekking

There are million questions related to gorilla tracking in Africa. The most difficult of all is about who can track these gentle giants. To start with is the age, anyone below the age of fifteen is allowed to track the gorillas in Uganda, Rwanda and of course DR Congo. All parents wish the best for their children, this being true, many clients want to track with their children who are underage. So we find our selves losing clients because of age. The second question is about fitness. Fit or not fit, you will be able to track the gorillas. It is so surprising but even the very old, above ninety years come and enjoy the trek. So if you were still undecided whether to book a gorilla safari or not, just go ahead and book a trip of your lifetime and see the endangered gorillas in the wild.

Tracking the giants is divided into two routes. The first trek is the hike from the closest car park to the bamboo forest and Volcanoes national park boundary and the trekkers usually spend 35 minutes to one hour depending on the pace they are moving on. While the second trek enters the same bamboo forest at the forest edge. The second route is known for the advanced and super fit trekkers, which is not the case for those taking the first. The first route trekkers can be predictable, and it is usually quite flat and undemanding though it will be different if you request for Susa gorilla group, which involves a longer and steeper ascent. It is the most strenuous group in Volcanoes national park.

The second gorilla trek route is quite tricky to predict, it usually depends on the movement of the gorillas or where they will have spent the night and on the steepness of the terrain en route. There are some other factors that may determine how hard this second trek will be such as the density of the vegetation that is bending, crawling through the jungle can be tiring especially if you have to dodge vicious nettles and whether it raining or has rained recently, in which case everything will be muddy and quite slippery underfoot.

In Rwanda, the allocation of gorilla groups is not based on accommodation or sectors as the case is in Uganda. Groups are allocated on request, fitness or age. In this, the most essential question here is how difficult the hike will be is which group you are allocated. It is on record that the hike to the Susa Group is the most strenuous but also most rewarding, with more than 40 gorillas on show, while the Sabinyo Group is the most reliably straightforward to reach, yet the hikes to Kwitonda, Hirwa and Group Thirteen are not that strenuous, you may call them moderate hikes whereas the hikes to Amahoro Umubano Groups tend to be more difficult, but not as tough as the Susa Group. If it is not your lucky day, any gorilla group might turn out to be difficult to hike, gorilla tracking not being a theory that it does not change, it all depends on the movement of the animals and where they spent the night. In addition, you cannot be guaranteed which gorilla group you will be allocated in advance. However the guides at Musanze do make a conscious attempt to match individuals to the most suitable group, this is so often on request. In general, the biggest number requesting for the Susa group consists of the lean-looking under-40s, while the opposite holds true for Sabinyo group.

Furthermore, the muddy routes or steepness and high altitude are also challenges to gorilla tracking. The biggest number of our visitors come from towns and cities with good road and communication network, which is totally the opposite in Africa, so they are unused to walking on the more irregular and seasonally slippery surfaces typical of the ascent paths and forest floor. This in mind, wearing strong waterproof shoes or hiking boots with a good tread and solid ankle support is highly recommended. Furthermore, if you think you might struggle in these conditions, there is a lot to be said for avoiding the rainy seasons, especially the months of February, March, April to early May, when conditions can be dauntingly muddy. To those whose dream is to meet the gentle giants face to face, all these are nothing!
